There’s a new way to date online, and finally it’s for everyone
There’s a growing buzz around HowAboutWe.com, a unique dating web site that I think will appeal to the Missed Connections community. They are proposing a new way to date online, which I reckon might just catch on like wildfire: you come up with date ideas you actually want to go on, and then the courting begins.
What an awesome way to see if there’s chemistry – doing something you both enjoy (or want to try), and if there’s no spark, well at least you’re trying something different you wouldn’t have otherwise.
Design wise, it looks great (I wish Missed Connections looked this good) but even if it looked like a circa 1997 Geocities home page, the concept has enough legs that it wouldn’t matter.
If you visit the home page you’ll see a slideshow of date ideas that suck you in and give you an idea of what to expect when you join:

I’m so into this idea, I decided to call Brian, one of HowAboutWe’s founders, and he kindly took some time out to give me a rundown of how it works.
Once you get started, registration is fast and fun. Rate some dates so the site knows what to send you, then propose your own.
Here’s a screen grab of some of the date ideas from the editorial staff at GuestofaGuest.com:

Proposing a date on the site is really easy:

Having trouble coming up with a good date idea? No problem, there’s a “Use this date” button to help get your creativity flowing.
HowAboutWe.com is in beta for pre-registration now and the full-fledged site for New York City launches in March (I’ll be recommending they bring this to London soon, I think its one of the World’s biggest cities for singles).
At that time, users will be able to propose as many dates as they want. Everyday they’ll also receive date proposals from other users. If they like the proposals they get, they can check out the proposer’s profile and message them. And thus, a new kind of dating ensues.
The site also offers a “Datetropolis” – an “Athens” of dates suggesting the best local dating spots.
Based on recent buzz in the blogosphere, the site will be attracting users who have avoided dating in the past:
From GuestofaGuest: HowAboutWe.com, A Dating Site We Might All Actually Use
And TheFrisky reports: A Non-Lame Dating Site…
It is amazing that this is the first dating site to focus on the date itself, it’s a great starting point for connecting.
If you’re single, I think its time to sign up and start coming up with some good date ideas. I would be if HowAboutWe came out when I was single.
