Missed Connections versus Online Dating
Just read Scott James’ “In the Calculations of Online Dating, Love Can Be Cruel” article in the NY Times.
In short, some people have noticed online dating manners are nose-diving. The Internet makes it easier than real life to be rude to people you are meeting for the first time. You can ignore messages, for example, or you can tell someone they aren’t good enough for you.
One thought is that what is causing this are unrealistic expectations generated by dating sites with lists of questions on your desires. These lists have turned online dating into something like choosing the extras you want on a new car.
The final sentence, a quote from Ms. Funai (someone who has unfortunately had some bad online dating experiences) holds some hidden hope for the future of the web and romance:
“What everyone is looking for is chemistry and that’s not quantifiable.”
Our site, I hope, is that hidden hope for some people: if you felt some chemistry when you saw someone in real life but for whatever reason didn’t get that person’s number, you can post a missed connection to try to regain that lost chance. Its a long shot but reconnections do happen.
