“Why I stuck your USB flash drive up there” girl responds to best ever missed connection

There’s been a Philly missed connection lighting up the web as contender for best missed connection ever, maybe you’ve seen it, the title gives you a good idea of what to expect, You stuck my flash drive in your vagina, you can find the full details at Gizmodo.

Someone wishing to remain anonymous emailed the MissedConnections.com blog saying we’d all do well to remember there’s two sides to every story, suggesting the original missed connection poster is being unfair by not mentioning his USB flash drive has a novelty nature that is hard to resist. The email included the following attachment:

New Missed Connections film shows what happens when you reply to every ad

MISSED CONNECTIONS is a pessimistic romantic comedy about Jamie, a misanthropic loser who becomes obsessed with a London newspaper’s Missed Connections column, in which lovestruck singles attempt to find a stranger who caught their eye the previous day, but failed to talk to. Upon realising the unlikelihood of any of its contributors finding their soulmate, he hatches a plan in a moment of cynical genius; he starts replying to all of them.

The film will be included as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner, which runs from May 12th-22nd. The film will also have a free public screening as part of Cannes in a Van, a mobile cinema parked along the city’s Croisette, on May 15th at 9:30pm, for which the Director Chris Presswell and a selection of cast and crew will be in attendance.

For more information on the film and screenings see http://www.papersunfilms.co.uk/missedconnections

There’s a new way to date online, and finally it’s for everyone

There’s a growing buzz around HowAboutWe.com, a unique dating web site that I think will appeal to the Missed Connections community. They are proposing a new way to date online, which I reckon might just catch on like wildfire: you come up with date ideas you actually want to go on, and then the courting begins.

What an awesome way to see if there’s chemistry – doing something you both enjoy (or want to try), and if there’s no spark, well at least you’re trying something different you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Design wise, it looks great (I wish Missed Connections looked this good) but even if it looked like a circa 1997 Geocities home page, the concept has enough legs that it wouldn’t matter.

If you visit the home page you’ll see a slideshow of date ideas that suck you in and give you an idea of what to expect when you join:

I’m so into this idea, I decided to call Brian, one of HowAboutWe’s founders, and he kindly took some time out to give me a rundown of how it works.

Once you get started, registration is fast and fun. Rate some dates so the site knows what to send you, then propose your own.

Here’s a screen grab of some of the date ideas from the editorial staff at GuestofaGuest.com:

Proposing a date on the site is really easy:

Having trouble coming up with a good date idea? No problem, there’s a “Use this date” button to help get your creativity flowing.

HowAboutWe.com is in beta for pre-registration now and the full-fledged site for New York City launches in March (I’ll be recommending they bring this to London soon, I think its one of the World’s biggest cities for singles).

At that time, users will be able to propose as many dates as they want. Everyday they’ll also receive date proposals from other users. If they like the proposals they get, they can check out the proposer’s profile and message them. And thus, a new kind of dating ensues.

The site also offers a “Datetropolis” – an “Athens” of dates suggesting the best local dating spots.

Based on recent buzz in the blogosphere, the site will be attracting users who have avoided dating in the past:

From GuestofaGuest: HowAboutWe.com, A Dating Site We Might All Actually Use

And TheFrisky reports: A Non-Lame Dating Site…

It is amazing that this is the first dating site to focus on the date itself, it’s a great starting point for connecting.

If you’re single, I think its time to sign up and start coming up with some good date ideas. I would be if HowAboutWe came out when I was single.

Chatroulette gets its own Missed Connections site

Chatroulette

Chatroulette, the “video stranger chat” site now has a dedicated missed connections web site.

This was needed as chatroulette missed connection ads have been appearing all over the web, without there being a single place to bring them all together and so the likelihood of reconnections happening is greatly reduced.

The aim of the chatroulette missed connections site is to have all these missed connections under one roof, whether they are posted on Missed Connections or on Craigslist, and so people who lost each other on Chatroulette have a better chance of finding each other again.

Missed Connections Posted To Paris Billboards!

As reported on The Frisky, Paris is accepting missed connection submissions here.

On Valentine’s Day, the missed connections judged to be the most beautiful will be shown on boards like these throughout the city. I guess these boards are normally used for traffic and other public information.

Reminds me of something similar that before the London Paper’s demise, it would post selected ads from its lovestruck column on digital billboards throughout the Tube network.

This is a wonderful thing that will hopefully lead to some missed connection reconnections! Remember, if you have a missed connection in Paris (or anywhere else) then post it to our site and check our Paris missed connections.

Missed Connections versus Online Dating

Just read Scott James’ “In the Calculations of Online Dating, Love Can Be Cruel” article in the NY Times.

In short, some people have noticed online dating manners are nose-diving. The Internet makes it easier than real life to be rude to people you are meeting for the first time. You can ignore messages, for example, or you can tell someone they aren’t good enough for you.

One thought is that what is causing this are unrealistic expectations generated by dating sites with lists of questions on your desires. These lists have turned online dating into something like choosing the extras you want on a new car.

The final sentence, a quote from Ms. Funai (someone who has unfortunately had some bad online dating experiences) holds some hidden hope for the future of the web and romance:

“What everyone is looking for is chemistry and that’s not quantifiable.”

Our site, I hope, is that hidden hope for some people: if you felt some chemistry when you saw someone in real life but for whatever reason didn’t get that person’s number, you can post a missed connection to try to regain that lost chance. Its a long shot but reconnections do happen.

Read Scott’s article in full here.

Gumtree Missed Connections gone! Don’t panic, we’re here…

So as of 5th January 2010, Gumtree missed connections are no more. I’d love to say that’s because they were so dedicated to reuniting missed connections they decided to forward their missed connections community over here but unfortunately no.

With Gumtree’s MCs section gone that pretty much leaves Craigslist and us as the major missed connection sites.

That’s good news for us all, our site will grow as a result, and because you’ll only need to post your missed connection to just two sites to give yourself the best shot at reconnecting with that special someone.

For new users, just search for missed connections in your town/city/postcode/village using the search box at the top of this page.
