New Missed Connections film shows what happens when you reply to every ad
MISSED CONNECTIONS is a pessimistic romantic comedy about Jamie, a misanthropic loser who becomes obsessed with a London newspaper’s Missed Connections column, in which lovestruck singles attempt to find a stranger who caught their eye the previous day, but failed to talk to. Upon realising the unlikelihood of any of its contributors finding their soulmate, he hatches a plan in a moment of cynical genius; he starts replying to all of them.
The film will be included as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner, which runs from May 12th-22nd. The film will also have a free public screening as part of Cannes in a Van, a mobile cinema parked along the city’s Croisette, on May 15th at 9:30pm, for which the Director Chris Presswell and a selection of cast and crew will be in attendance.
For more information on the film and screenings see http://www.papersunfilms.co.uk/missedconnections

Documentary on Sophie Blackall and her missed connection illustrations
This is a great sub-5 minute doc on Sophie Blackall and her missed connections work. Really good to be able to put a face and voice to the artist and to hear her thoughts.
The documentary makers have done a top notch and fun job of live action recreations of some of her work (I’d have loved to have seen them recreate We Shared a Bear Suit and Hipster Chick Who Passed Gas).
Add to the comments on Sophie’s blog about the documentary here and see the latest illustration in the series: “Doing Laundry in Our Building“.

Even cats are getting missed connections now

In between checking email and doing serious research on cartoons from my childhood I found this entertaining missed connection for a cat posted by Marie on her blog. Thought it might tickle some of you.
Update Just read in the comments of Marie’s blog post that she has been reunited with the cat
Missed connections for cats do work is the lesson to learn here.
BONUS: As its a Saturday morning, and Saturday mornings are for cartoons, to give joy to my fellow children of the 80s here are the cartoons who were pulled from the brink of extinction in my memory today thanks to exploring Amazon and Wikipedia:
Mysterious Cities of Gold (currently watching this on DVD), Ulysses 31, Dogtanian and the Three Muskahounds, Willy Fog, Thundercats, Real Ghostbusters, He-Man, Dungeons and Dragons, Shoe People, Raggy Dolls.

Missed Connections Maps

I think the artist behind these maps is Dorothy, and I could try to explain each one, but they do such a great job of that themselves. Briefly, each map shows data about missed connections in the US, such as the average hair color of people being looked for:
- Missed connections mapped by specific locations, e.g. Walmart, LA fitness map 1, map 2
- Missed connections mapped by type of location, e.g. store, gym
- Missed connections mapped by hair color
- Missed connections mapped by age
- Missed connections mapped by gender4gender (w4m, m4w, m4m, w4w)
